Simple Sloppy Joes with Vegetable Relish
4-Ingredient Sloppy Joes
It doesn’t get much easier guys.
Ingredients
- Ground Beef
- Ketchup
- Tomato Sauce or Pasta Sauce
- Vegetable Relish
It might sound a little strange but since the basis of most sloppy joes are ground beef, peppers, onions, tomato base, etc. all of the ingredients in the relish check the boxes.
How to make the sloppy joes with vegetable relish
- Brown the ground beef and drain excess fat.
- Dump the rest of the ingredients into the pan with the browned ground beef and cook until the liquid has thickened up to your liking.
- That’s it.
It truly could not get any easier! We usually eat ours topped with just cheese and a bun but top away to your heart’s content.

Can I use it any other way?
Of course. Actually, the first way I had this sloppy joe mix was as a spaghetti, believe it or not. The vegetable relish I use is from my husband’s family’s recipe. One day when we were first dating he had told me that he would make me a spaghetti dinner. Naturally I was just thrilled someone else was cooking. But when I saw him dump relish into the pan my stomach flipped. First, I thought it was pickle relish so no matter what that would have been disgusting. But even when he said it was just vegetables I couldn’t wrap my head around any sort of vinegary flavor for my spaghetti. But let me tell you, it was great. So YES! Try it on spaghetti with some parmesan cheese and you’ll now have two different meals to make from this one recipe.

Side Note: also enjoy this on pasta with some parmesan cheese. Sounds weird, but it's good!
Ingredients
- 1 lb Ground Beef
- 1.5 cups Pasta Sauce or Tomato Sauce , Either pasta sauce or tomato sauce works, whichever you have on hand or prefer for flavor.
- 1/2 cup Ketchup
- 1 cup Vegetable Relish (1/2 of a pint)
Instructions
- Brown the ground beef until fully cooked.
- Add the ketchup, sauce, and relish.
- Cook until fully-combined and continue to cook until it is at your desired consistency.
- Put on a bun and add your toppings (if any). We usually just top it with cheese and call it a day.
Notes
This relish is one I can myself and always have on hand. It has cabbage, onions, bell peppers, green tomatoes, vinegar, sugar, water and spices. If you're buying store-bought please try to keep it as close as possible. See my website for the recipe to home can it yourself.
